and you thought you knew.. Jen Triano of 'Under'
|
|
Under's First EP - "The whole thing was recorded in drips and drabs whenever we could raise the money - and we called in all kinds of favors and used all the most talented people we know. Our live band will feature Daniel Berkman as well as Betsy Adams on guitar and Kevin White on bass."

Jen Triano of Under supplies some remarkably unique and innovative vocals for the four songs featured on their recently completed EP. The band have an enormously varied and dynamic approach to their music which makes them not only great musicians and composers but very fine producers of outstanding contemporary pop. It would have been an utterly senseless waste for us not to invite one of the people responsible for all of this over the US/Canadian border to answer the inevitable questions..

The Interview - November 14 2006 |
| Welcome to IOM Jen... can we begin with you telling us a bit about your background? |
I started with the Piano and moved on to guitar. I've always been a singer. I started writing songs when I was five. |
| What would you say have been your main musical influences? |
Bjork is my number one, also Kruder and Dorfmeister, and Peter Gabriel. |
| What could you tell us about “high points” in your musical career? |
Playing for 3,000 people at the Rocky Mt. Folk Festival though I lost because I'm not a folk singer - but the audience was great! |
| How about low points and how you managed to get over them? |
Playing lousy gigs all over the West Coast to drunk audiences, to get over it, I just kept playing!
|
| If you could turn the clocks back, is there anything you would have done differently? |
No! |
| Who did you work with on your most recent projects? |
My awesome band 'Under'. Also Paul Scriver did a lot of the engineering and programming. Daniel Berkman is our secret weapon and played a bunch of brilliant electric guitar on it. Steve Adams and Daryll Anders played bass. Damien Rassmussen also did some engineering and the drums were recorded by Mike Winger. The whole thing was recorded in drips and drabs whenever we could raise the money - and we called in all kinds of favors and used all the most talented people we know. Our live band will feature Daniel Berkman as well as Betsy Adams on guitar and Kevin White on bass. |
| If you could pick a favourite track from your recent work what would it be? |
Union' from the 'Under EP |
| What musical instruments/equipment do you normally use? |
Protools, Live, Reason, a guitar and a keyboard controller. |
| Do you have a favourite instrument either as a player or appreciator? |
Piano. |
| Can you remember your first stage and/or studio experience? |
Playing 'Oliver Twist' in the high school play. |

Bjork 'Vespertine', Peter Gabriel 'Us', The Sundays 'Blind', Midnite 'Unpolished', Kruder and Dorfmeister 'Peace Orchestra. |
| Do you have a favourite album cover of all time? |
| No. |
| and what, may we ask, are the five albums you listened to most recently? |
| Kaskade 'Calm', Air 'Talkie Walkie', Midnite 'Vijian', Japanese Flute for Meditation |
| What five movies did you watch most recently? |
MI3, XMen3, Happiness, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Blue. |
| Which artist would you most like to meet or borrow a bag of sugar from as a next door neighbour? |
| Bjork. |
| If you could have been responsible for writing the best song or piece of music ever written, what would it be? |
| Blood of Eden, by Peter Gabriel. |
| If you could have three wishes, what would they be? |
A vacation, a nap or a cigarette please! |
| On to the more intimate side of Jen Triano.. what did you dream about last night AND you can't say 'I do not remember'... |
An airplane flight! |
| And, if we were to “shadow” you on a typical day, what might we see you doing? |
Taking care of my son. |
| What did you do, the day before yesterday? |
| Went to the ocean with my son, started writing a new song. |
| If you had to move to another country for a year to record an album, but you only had a few suitcases and an hour to pack… what would you take? |
| Comfortable clothes, good shoes, hair dye, good books, good music, my laptop, and a pen and some paper! |
| What bugs you most? |
| Rude looks! |
| What makes your day really shine? |
| A smile from a stranger! |
| I hate to end it all like this Jen, but.. finally, what are your plans for 2007? |
Finishing my album with 'Under' and writing some new songs. Along with taking care of my son! |
| Jen Triano.. thanks for dropping by... the delightful Sandra will see you to the car! |
