and you thought you knew.. Tiny Volcano

"...in 2002 Scott and I formed Tiny Volcano with Tony and Dana. We originally formed to be a cover band, but found we had too many good original songs.. plus we couldn't hold Scott's attention with the covers. I discovered ukulele about the time the Concert For George came out. I really went overboard trying them and learning. I recently went to Hawaii and bought a new Kamaka concert ukulele. I also got a chance to play with a few very talented Hawaiian artists!"

It was all Andrea Perry's fault! Andrea introduced me to this phenomenal band.. and I Do mean 'phenomenal'.. a short while ago and so I immediately headed over to their website and was pleasantly blinded by their brilliance in triplicate in terms of their songwriting, musicianship, and production. Thanks Andrea!!!
As musicians, Tiny Volcano are true master craftsmen in every aspect and the final combined efforts that you hear on their current CD just happen to push those same peaks that their prime influences drew from including: Elvis Costello, XTC, Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, Squeeze, and the fabulous Finn brothers... all of whom (including Tiny Volcano) delight in enthralling your senses in a seemingly effortless yet unique and innovative fashion! What more could I do but to invite them over the border to answer for their immeasurably welcome sins...

The Interview - February 2005 |
| Welcome to IOM folks... can we begin with you telling us a bit about your background? |
(Scott) At 11 years old I saw an electric guitar at a friends house (the guitar belonging to his older brother), and I knew at that moment I wanted to play and write pop music. The Beatles made all the difference for me as far as inspiration. I taught myself to play guitar and then piano, then joined a band or two and eventually created Tiny Volcano.
(Tony) I was born and raised in Seattle , and have lived in the Puget Sound region for most of my life. I began my musical journey in elementary school, playing trumpet in school bands until high school, when I discovered my Dad's long neglected Sears Silvertone acoustic guitar in a closet. I was mostly a folkie, learning songs from Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, James Taylor, etc. I eventually got an electric guitar and got interested in learning rock music, such as Deep Purple, Rush and Led Zeppelin.
At 17, I joined a local band as their Bass player and we worked at it full-time until I was 22, when I decided I'd had enough of being in a full-time bar band. I later went to college and became a geographer. I eventually gravitated back to being a working musician, and played in a weekend band during my last year of college, where I met Jon, who was good friends with the guys in that band. Jon and I later played in another band formed from the ashes of that college band.
(Jon) I started playing guitar when I was 12. I played in the usual high school cover bands. I met Scott when I was 18. We immediately started writing songs together. I have always felt a connection with him musically. At age 21 I joined a band with Tony and other musicians. Later I joined a local cover band that was fairly popular in Tacoma.
After a few years we broke up. I played in various original bands and various cover bands. All the while I played on the side with various solo artists. I really got into folk music and classic country. I never lost my love for Rock and Heavy Metal.
Finally in 2002 Scott and I formed Tiny Volcano with Tony and Dana. I also got a chance to play with a few very talented Hawaiian artists! |
| What would you say have been your main musical influences? |
(Scott) I am perpetually inspired by the music I grew up with. That would be 70's AM pop/rock radio stuff …like Wings, ELO, Beatles, Beach Boys, Queen and Harry Nilsson, but there are many more recent artist like Prefab Sprout, Jellyfish, Owsley and Bend Folds who inspire my writing style.
(Tony) The Beatles have been my main musical inspiration/influence since I was old enough to be aware of music.
(Jon) Beatles, Brian Wilson, Neil and Tim Finn. |
| What could you tell us about “high points” in your musical career? |
(Scott) The pop festivals have always been favourites for me. I also enjoyed radio station visits when I was with “Liar's Club” back in the 90's, and of course the release of the Tiny Volcano CD. Oh, and when Andy Sturmer from “Jellyfish” told me he thought some of the Liar's Club song lyrics were brilliant (that was pretty cool too).
(Tony) Playing the Paramount Theatre in Seattle when I was 19, Opening act for The Romantics at 21, recording and release of the Tiny Volcano album.
(Jon) IPO Los Angeles, I also loved playing with my son's class for preschool graduation.
|
| How about low points and how you managed to get over them? |
(Scott) When Liar's Club was scheduled to open for “Jellyfish” at the Backstage in Seattle –and all communication between our manager and the club owner fell apart and we were ditched from the gig, sad night indeed …but a great show.
(Tony) Can't think of any!
(Jon) I moved to Northern California for two years. I did not have a good time musically.
|
| If you could turn the clocks back, is there anything you would have done differently? |
(Scott) I'd love to go back to 1982 and form a bitchin New Wave band, no …really.
(Jon) October 30th.. 1965. I think I was made for those times. |
| Who did you work with on your most recent projects? |
(Scott) We are working on the follow-up to the Tiny Volcano debut. And we have all been helping out on the “Vanilla” project, and a possible Liar's Club project might happen next year as well.
Tiny Volcano consists of myself (Scott McPherson), Jon Ecklund –guitars and vox, Tony Cooper – bass and vox, and lead vox on the tune “You Wanna Go”, and Dana Sims on drums/percussion.
I wrote all the songs with the exception of “10 Nights in a Row”, that tune was written with Jon Ecklund. Mega Talent and all around sweet girl – “Andrea Perry” played piano on “Building a Bridge (Out of Water)”, and her pal Danny Levine did a fantastic job of composing and playing the string section on that tune as well. Our good buddy Kirk Adams (also a huge talent ) added his pop genius to a track called “Summer Solstice”.
|
| If you could pick a favourite track from your recent work what would it be? |
(Jon) Tiny Volcano, the acoustic part is very tricky and exhausting.
(Tony) From Tiny Volcano, I am pleased with how "You Wanna Go" turned out. I was at the tail-end of a bad cold and was losing my voice, but Scott, being the persuasive producer/engineer, kept insisting on "just one more" take. So I'd take a swig of Throat-Coat tea and have a go.
(Scott) I honestly don't have a favourite, but I seem to listen to “Loaded Gun” a lot.
|
| What musical instruments/equipment do you normally use? |
Recording: My PC, (2) Roland VS1680's, Audio Technica, AKG and Shure microphones (sm57 & 58's), Vegas 4.0 and a lot of plug-ins! Oh, and a few vintage Roland S-50 and D-50 keyboards. The Proteus and a Roland Guitar Synth.
Rickenbacker 360-12V64, 1972 Fender Stratocaster, Gretsch 6120SSU, Epiphone Sheridan, Larrivee LR3, Anderson 2x12 amplifier, Marshall 100 watt DSL, Gibson Les Paul. Heritage guitars, Marshall 100 watt JCM 900/4 x10 cab, Yamaha acoustic, Kramer bass and some crappy gear here and there.
1979 Rickenbacker 4001 bass with Bartolini pickups and Fender Roundwound strings, run in stereo with the bass pickup going direct to the mixing board, and the treble pickup into a Sans-Amp bass preamp, then to the mixing board. 1973 Fender Jazz bass with Badass bridge, and DR Roundwound strings. Both basses played through an Ampeg V-4 head and an Ampeg SVT cabinet during various songs. |
| Do you have a favourite instrument either as a player or appreciator? |
(Jon) I love my new Gretsch 6122SP
(Tony) I like the Rickenbacker's neck - it must be the easiest playing bass for me. I really like the Fender Jazz for its versatility and ergonomics. I can get most any sound I want out of it.
(Scott) I am enjoying the piano more so these days.
|
| Can you remember your first stage and/or studio experience? |
(Tony) My first stage experience was with a band called Redax when I was 17. We played in a VFW hall, and I was so inexperienced on the bass that I paid no attention to the audience, just to the music.
(Jon) 7th Grade talent show. I was scared BIG time. It went fine.
(Scott) My first band (Night Flight) performing a rehearsal in Jerry Cantrell's (Alice in Chains) living room. Jerry was the other guitar player in the band-and his mom was very cool about us playing in her living room, even though the neighbours called the police. |
