and you thought you knew.. Stephanie St John

"...I learned to never use the word love in a song (not allowed) and to rawwwwk!

After some years and chance meetings, I formed my own band for my rockin singer songwritery songs called “MiMi Ferocious” – a six member band with 3 grrrls and 3 guys. Our songs are pop/rock and sometimes even prog with a touch of nostalgia. They're all my songs and the MiMis and I arrange them into three - five minute pop rock marvels!"

Stephanie St John has almost written enough songs to be able to have an anthology published. This NYC girl is as vibrant and energetic vocally as her songs are through either headphones or speakers. With her band 'MiMi Ferocious' the girl is proving to be quite a handful of extraorindary talent with equally talented musicians. It's only a matter of time before we can flick through her CDs in the stores with the same kind of excitement you'd attribute to choosing an album from an accomplished best selling mainstream artist. It takes a lot of hard work and a passion for your art to be able to get to where she's going. We thought we'd ask the inevitable questions just before she books her tickets...

The Interview - March 2004
Welcome to IOM Steph. can we begin with you telling us a bit about your background?

I've sung since I was little, against my will to relatives, and with teachers in class. I studied classically until college, where I was a musical theatre major. Moved to NYC and did some theatre, yada yada yada, but it wasn't until I dated a poet that I started writing lyrics. I think I was trying to woo him!

Anyway, I had my guitar that I learned on as a kid and one night I put my words to some chords and boom, there was my first song!

I stopped doing theatre all together and became obsessed with songwriting. I did open mics and was quite folksy. But soon, I was kidnapped by the trip hop band VDISC to be their lead singer. It was with them that I learned to never use the word love in a song (not allowed) and to rawwwwk!

After some years and chance meetings, I formed my own band for my rockin singer songwritery songs called “MiMi Ferocious” – a six member band with 3 grrrls and 3 guys. Our songs are pop/rock and sometimes even prog with a touch of nostalgia. They're all my songs and the MiMis and I arrange them into three - five minute pop rock marvels!

What would you say have been your pivotal musical influences?
My older brother loved old Blondie, Boomtown Rats, Joy Division, so I know I'm influenced there. Oh and my mom played Beach Boys on 8 track all day long. I guess that's why I'm a sucker for harmonies and a catchy melody. On my own, it's always been Led Zepellin, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, 80's music, PJ Harvey, Queen. I like music I can sing loud to in the car. Oh and I secretly love RUSH.
What could you tell us about “high points” in your musical career?

I sang at the UN after Sept 11 th, a song of hope written by my friend and musical colleage David First. That was kind of amazing. And really, any time I perform and I feel connected to the audience and I'm channelling Robert Plant or what have you, that is what keeps me going. And of course being featured by Colin Lynch!

How about low points?

I think the worst it ever got was a show we did at this disco called Neva, run by these Russian mobsters on cell phones who didn't know how to work a PA or what a sound system meant. We had really publicized that show and people just hated that place. It was cold, the cover was more than we said, the drinks were 10 dollars and the sound was god awful. I think a couple of people vowed to never see us again. Oh, also one day my mailing list was stolen by this guy that had a virus on his computer that emailed my list every minute all day about his 2 shows. I lost a lot of people from my list that day. Those days are gone now, we keep our list under lock and key!

If you could turn the clocks back, is there anything you would have done differently?

I would mix albums differently. I would have paid more attention in the mixing room and really went with a gut feeling if I didn't like something instead of relying on the producer's ear 100%.

Who did you work with on your most recent projects and what would they be?

My band, MiMi Ferocious, just finished our album, 250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar coming out on Lunch Lady Records. We were lucky enough to have producer Nik Chinboukas, (The Misfits) take our tracks and give it the Greek God rock love they deserved at Spin Music Studios, NYC. He literally saved our album from an almost burned out harddrive and gave it some old school warmth.

David First (http://www.davidfirst.com), with the Lazy Eyes

Lin Esser was the leader of my first band VDisc - he co-wrote BROWN, my Besonic hit!

My band MiMi Ferocious's members are David Wilson on bass whom I've had the pleasure of working and eating jerky with for about 5 years now – Michael Preston who plays electric guitar on the album who used to lead the smoove groove band SHAGG – David Ross on drums from the band JABBER – my 2 back up harmony MiMiettes, Kim Winter and Michele Kantor who are musical goddesses. And David Silva from the band The Amber Smith plays drums on Cinderella's Dead and some of 250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar .

This album, 250 Times Sweeter than Sugar will be available at the Lunch Lady site ( http://www.lunchladyrecords.com ) and our site, http://www.mimiferocious.com , also Amazon, CDBaby and various stores throughout the land.

My solo album (with most of the same band members of MiMi Ferocious and they're all named David, I might add) Cinderella's Dead, is available at CDbaby: http://www.cdbaby.com/stephstjohn and Stooz Records, NYC.

Also, my album with David First, in our exerimental band, The Lazy Eyes will be out soon on Analysand Records, titled, Tokyo Could Not Be Opened Because Tokyo Could Not Be Found , and will be available through CDBaby, at various record stores and at http://www.lazyeyes.net

If you could pick a favourite track from your recent work what would it be?
I think I will always be proud of Cab Driver. It's a basically true tale (except for one or 2 minor details) And I feel the recording of it on “… Sugar ” is simple and rocking all at once, telling the story, yet capturing the playful yet sad mood. Plus, I think it's a perfect use of drum loopage.
What musical instruments/equipment do you normally use?

Baby Taylor for alternative tunings, acoustic Gibson J20, Roland 505, Boss tuner. Recording wise Oh my goodness.. I don't know! All I know is that Spin had everything. Nik would know what it all is, but I just couldn't tell you. We started on pro-tools and ended up putting all the tracks to 1 inch tape for the warmth and mid range. The mics were tube mics. They were amazing and took a while to warm up. That's all I could tell you!

Do you have a favourite instrument either as a player or appreciator?

n/a

Can you remember your first stage and/or studio experience?

My first stage experience as a musician was terrifying, as it was the first time I was to perform my song outside of my bedroom – I think I dropped my pict mid-song a few times. But I ended up getting a lot of boyfriends during that time - they all wanted to help me.

What five albums would you want to find if you were stranded on a desert island with enough food, water, a copy of IOM, a complete collection of signed Beatles guitars, and a fantastic CD player?

Blondie – Plastic Letters , Led Zeppelin - IV, The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs , Elvis Costello – Imperial Bedroom, Joni Mitchell - For the Roses.

Do you have a favourite album cover of all time?
n/a
and what, may we ask, are the five albums you listened to most recently?
Jeff Buckey – Grace, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – not sure which one, George Michael's greatest hits, Bell and Sebastian's first album and ok I'll admit it, mine!
What five movies did you watch most recently?

The Station Agent, Modern Times, Gandhi, Jaws and The War Room.

Which artist would you most like to meet or borrow a bag of sugar from as a next door neighbour?
n/a
If you could have been responsible for writing the best song or piece of music ever written, what would it be?
n/a
If you could have three wishes, what would they be?

Well, of course, 1 - that MiMi Ferocious gets the attention that we deserve and that we'll do a world tour for the album and get paid bunches of money to record our next album!!!

2 - that all suicide bombers and the like would just STOP IT and find something to live for besides death, or at the very least find a peaceful way to strive for what they want.

and ideally, 3 -that nobody ever again would want to hurt another animal or human being.
On to the more intimate side of Miss Mimi.. what did you dream about last night AND you can't say 'I do not remember'...

I dreamt I was high in a castle and there were these two men and a woman trying to break into my castle to get me. I had to hide these eggs in a tissue box because they contained the evidence that they were trying to poison me. They ended up breaking in but I eventually beat them off with frying pans. Maybe it's a biological clock dream?

And, if we were to “shadow” you on a typical day, what might we do?

Coffee, Tae Bo, snuggle with my cats and talk of trips to Slovakia, working on new songs, bringing them into rehearsal with the band, waiting for our album to get back from the manufacturer, do my work work, kill more plants…

What did you do, the day before yesterday?
I had rehearsal that night, so I worked on a couple of new songs that I was to bring into rehearsal for the band to try out that night. And I also took a bath.
If someone were to tell you to pack your bags and 'never come back' what would you take?
My guitar, a notebook, my cats, black eyeliner and my favorite bra and undies.
What bugs you most?
Mean yoga teachers!
What makes your day really shine?
n/a
I hate to end it all like this Steph but.. finally, what are your plans for 2004?

To get MiMi Ferocious – 250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar to the masses, on the radio, in people's cars! World domination through rock!!! http://www.mimiferocious check us out!!
