and you thought you knew.. Muniklip

"I sometimes wake up wondering if I’m chasing a dream that won’t materialize?  I also wonder if I’m wasting my time because I don’t hear people talking about me like they do 50 Cent and Ludacris.  It can be very depressing if you allow yourself to think that way, but I understand that there is a lot of money out there to be made.  My wife has been my rock, and she won’t allow me to even contemplate quitting!"

Muniklip - 'Da lyrical Don' himself has his fingers in so many immeasurably cleverly creative pies it's hard to keep track of what the man's gonna be cooking up next. Intent on turning up the heat on the world's iPods, decks, and CD players with some truly outstanding rock/hip hop innovations, Muniklip just had to be made to answer for his sins after being dragged across the border to answer the inevitable questions..

The Interview - November 16 2006
Welcome to IOM Muniklip... can we begin with you telling us a bit about your background?

I grew up in Hazen, Arkansas and started recording music when I was 12.  At that time I didn’t know what a studio, a bar, or any of those technical recording terms were!  I just knew what I wanted to say when I heard a tight beat.

Much of my time was spent earning money mowing yards and washing cars to afford karaoke machines, mics, blank tapes, and envelopes for mailing out demos to the addresses I found on vinyl records.

Right now I do my own graphic design for my websites and clothing.  I have released two albums in 2006, Gut Check: Version 1 & Gut Check: Final Cut (both are available at cdbaby.com).

My stage name, Muniklip (pronounced “money clip”), was my wife’s idea. On New Year’s Day in 2004 I decided to change my stage name to something more meaningful.  I wanted to be known as someone who was holding the money; hence, Muniklip was born.  My wife wanted the spelling to be unique. Kitty Kitty is one of my favorite songs.  An artist signed to my label, Mo B (aka Marissee Boyd) originally performed the song.  I remixed the song and made it part of my Gut Check: Final Cut album.  He and I are set to travel to Bahrain next year to perform it.  Most of the digital sells from my albums have come via Apple Itunes, and Kitty Kitty has been one of my top selling songs.

I want to get into film.. serious drama.  I really want to have a huge part in an action film or find the right director to breath life into the super hero characters I’ve developed over the past couple of years.  For me it’s about more than just releasing an album.  It’s about taking that product and plugging it into revenue generating opportunities: soundtracks, commercials, ads, etc.  You don’t know how long you’ll be the one everyone’s talking about, so it’s important to get what you can while you can!

What would you say have been your main musical influences?

There are so many people that have influenced me: Brian Mcknight, Sheryl Crow, MC Lyte, Garth Brooks, Ludacris, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Luthor Vandross, Gerald Levert, Anita Baker, Bonnie Ratt, New Edition, Michael Jordan, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Guns and Roses, 50 Cent, etc.  Yeah, some of those names make you scratch your head, but they all have things about them that drove me.

What could you tell us about “high points” in your musical career?

Having my music pumped on Power 92.3 in Little Rock, Arkansas during their Pump It or Dump It segment.  Every song I’ve ever sent to the station was pumped.  This year I performed in Oklahoma City, Dallas, and Little Rock.  My first book of poetry, A Heart’s Testimony, was released online. I was offered a part in a short film a week ago.  I thought that was cool since I am trying to land a few small parts to add to my resume.  I really want to have a huge part in an action film or find the right director to breath life into the super hero characters I’ve developed over the past couple of years.

How about low points and how you managed to get over them?

I sometimes wake up wondering if I’m chasing a dream that won’t materialize.  I also wonder if I’m wasting my time because I don’t hear people talking about me like they do 50 Cent and Ludacris.  It can be very depressing if you allow yourself to think that way, but I understand that there is a lot of money out there to be made.  My wife has been my rock, and she won’t allow me to even contemplate quitting.

If you could turn the clocks back, is there anything you would have done differently?

I wasn’t ready back then, and my lyrical delivery wasn’t as potent as it is now.  The mistakes I made back then made me the smart businessman I am now!

Who did you work with on your most recent projects?

Some underground MCs: Rip of Soultaker Records, Mo B, & Stealth Assassin of Northwest Alliance.  I got my instrumentals from Dj Cboss of Soultaker Records, Rome of Roman Ventures, & Reginald Browning of Kamikaze Beatz.

If you could pick a favourite track from your recent work what would it be?

Power Moves, because it a song that tells people that I can’t be stopped, and that’s how I really feel when it comes to me fulfilling my dreams.

What musical instruments/equipment do you normally use?

Fruityloops, Wavelab, & Adobe Audition.

Do you have a favourite instrument either as a player or appreciator?

808 drums!

Can you remember your first stage and/or studio experience?

High School talent show.  I was on stage beat boxing as my twin brother rapped.  My first studio experience was at Doghouse Studios in Little Rock, AR.  The first joint I recorded was “Jiggy Enuff.”  Reggie McClellan has been my engineer since 1999.

What five albums would you want to find if you were stranded on a desert island with enough food, water, a copy of IOM, a fantastic audio system, and any one musical instrument of your choice?

2 Pac – All Eyez on Me, Anita Baker - Rapture, Brian Mcknight – I Remember You, Janet Jackson – Janet, Ludacris – Word of Mouf.

Do you have a favourite album cover of all time?

2 Pac – R U Still Down cover.

and what, may we ask, are the five albums you listened to most recently?

Haven’t heard a lot of solid albums lately.  I pick out a bunch of singles as they break.

What five movies did you watch most recently?

Superman Returns, X-Men Last Stand, Mission Impossible 3, Da Vinci Code, & Gridiron Gang

Which artist would you most like to meet or borrow a bag of sugar from as a next door neighbour?

Ludacris, 50 Cent, Fat Joe, Diddy, & Flavor Flav

If you could have been responsible for writing the best song or piece of music ever written, what would it be?
Chariots of Fire by Vangelis.
If you could have three wishes, what would they be?

Give me and all of my family members financial security and good health.  I’d also wish for world peace.

On to the more intimate side of Mr Muniklip.. what did you dream about last night AND you can't say 'I do not remember'...

Gettin’ some!

And, if we were to “shadow” you on a typical day, what might we see you doing?

Tirelessly hustling to make a buck at my job at Cingular and at home in front of my pc.

What did you do, the day before yesterday?

Same thing I do everyday, hustle for that dollar bill!

If you had to move to another country for a year to record an album, but you only had a few suitcases and an hour to pack…  what would you take?

I must first assume that I am being paid to do so; therefore I would take a laptop to surf the net, an ipod with 2 gigs of music, 10 of my favorite dvds, 2 weeks worth of clothes (I’ll buy more during the year), my family (they would suffer without me), and 250 bags of gummy worms (luv um!!)

What bugs you most?

People who can’t keep their word and those who bail when times get hard.

What makes your day really shine?

Request to be added to my friend’s list on my myspace page and emails from people in the music business who want to do real business with me.

I hate to end it all like this MK, but.. finally, what are your plans for 2007?

I plan on making my first million.  I also plan on becoming a fulltime artist and not working for anyone else but myself!

Muniklip.. thanks for dropping by... the delightful Sandra will see you to the car!
